Start with the pigs, our most enthusiastic recyclers. Bakery scraps, spent veggies, the carrot that didn't make the farmstand cut: it all goes their way, and they turn it over with the kind of joy most of us reserve for vacation. What they leave behind becomes compost, and that compost goes back into the beds, feeding next season's heirloom tomatoes, squash, and flowers. The vegetables you take home from the stand or the Field Share are, in a very real sense, a thank-you note from the pigs. Out in the pasture, the Highlands graze their way across the field, and the chickens and turkeys following behind like a cleanup crew with opinions. They scratch, peck, spread manure, and work fertility into the ground. Healthier soil grows thicker, more resilient pasture, which brings the cattle back to better grazing than they left. Round and round it goes, each pass leaving the land a little richer than before. Then there's the bread. Flour, water, salt, and time, shaped by hand and baked in small batches. But a loaf of sourdough is never really about the loaf. It's about the table it lands on: a family dinner, a friend who stayed longer than planned, a Saturday morning with butter and nowhere to be. If the pasture connects the animals to the soil, the bread connects us to each other. None of this happens by accident. As farmers, our job is less about controlling each piece and more about listening to how they play together. We intentionally care for and work with every part of this place, the animals, the soil, the gardens, the ovens, like a symphony. Each section has its own part to play, and when we get the timing right, the whole thing moves in harmony. (Though most days the roosters insist on a solo. We allow it.) That's the heart of it. This isn't a pig operation, a cattle operation, a veggie operation, and a bakery sharing an address. It's one farm, deeply connected, each piece feeding into the next. And the connection that runs through every layer of this farm doesn't stop at the fence line. It's a blueprint for the connection we want between our community and its food. You can know the people who raised your protein, grew your veggies, and baked your bread. You can see the pasture your pork came from, ask how the carrots were grown, and hear the story behind the berries that made the jam. Food with a face, a field, and a first name. Every choice we make is aimed at the same two things: nourishing this land and nourishing the community that gathers around it. When you pick up your share, shop the farmstand, or tear into a loaf at your own table, you're not just a customer. You're part of the circle too. As the growing season winds down, the rhythm of our days is shifting too. Mornings start a little later, evenings end a little sooner, and the beds that fed us all summer are being tucked in under cover crops for their long winter nap. It's a season of wrapping up and settling in, and a good moment to pause and say it plainly: we are so grateful to be part of this community.
